RGB MiniLED backlight: high-end trump card or marketing gimmick?

In recent years, display technology has been iteratively upgraded at an unprecedented speed, and has gradually formed a differentiated coexistence situation of LCD, MLED, and OLED, continuing to increase market penetration in the competition. While traditional Mini LED backlight technology is accelerating its decline in the market, RGB Mini LED backlight technology has made a high-profile appearance and has shown the potential to innovate display technology, which has attracted widespread attention.

Since this year, Samsung, Sony, Hisense, TCL CSOT, etc. have successively demonstrated TV products equipped with RGB Mini LED backlight technology. Among them, Hisense officially released its world's first RGB-Mini LED TV on March 21 and opened pre-sales, which to a certain extent marks the beginning of this technology moving from the proof-of-concept stage to the early stage of mass production.

In the future, several other major brands will also gradually launch mass-produced products: Sony said it will launch the first commercial product equipped with this technology at the CES show in January 2026; Samsung is rumored to officially release an RGB backlight TV product series in June, which means that there is another "hard technical battle" between Chinese and Korean brand manufacturers.

So, does RGB Mini LED backlight technology really have the potential to lead changes in the high-end display market?

What are the advantages of RGB Mini LED backlight?

At present, the mainstream white light solution in the market relies on KFS phosphor or quantum dot conversion (blue Mini LED chip excites yellow phosphor to form white light, or realizes white light through quantum dot film, and then displays color through the color filter of the LCD panel). In contrast, RGB Mini LED backlight technology has made fundamental innovations at the light source level: directly using the three primary colors of red (R), green (G), and blue (B). LED chips can mix light or emit light independently. This structural difference brings about a significant improvement in image quality.

Since some losses and crosstalk caused by phosphor conversion and color filters are eliminated, and the three-color light sources can be controlled independently, the RGB backlight solution is superior to traditional backlight solutions in terms of color gamut, color purity and saturation, contrast, brightness control accuracy and energy consumption. It also has greater flexibility and potential in color adjustment and white level control, providing a hardware foundation for more accurate color management. In addition, since the light attenuation problem of quantum dots is avoided, the product life of the RGB backlight solution is theoretically longer.

It is reported that laboratory data has previously shown that by removing the phosphor layer, the color purity of RGB backlight is increased to 97.8%, reaching 82% of the BT.2020 color gamut (traditional WLED is only 54%). Moreover, experiments at the University of Tokyo have confirmed that the number of backlight partitions required to achieve 100% coverage under the rec.709 standard has been reduced from 512 to 256.

In terms of brightness, the peak brightness of the Samsung QN900C engineering prototype exceeded 4000nits. With VA+MLA composite film technology, the recognition rate in the solar glare simulation test was 41% higher than that of QD-OLED. In SDR mode, the dynamic contrast ratio measurement value reached 2,000,000:1, which solved the brightness step fault problem of traditional Mini LED global dimming.

In summary, RGB Mini LED backlight technology can theoretically provide an upper limit of image quality that is far superior to traditional white Mini LED backlight technology, making it a more ideal choice for users who pursue the ultimate visual experience.

What is the difficulty with RGB Mini LED backlight?

Just like all cutting-edge technologies experience pain in the early stages of their birth, the road to RGB Mini LED backlight will not be smooth. Although there has been a qualitative leap in color, energy efficiency and image quality, RGB Mini LED backlights still face many technical and cost challenges from the laboratory to large-scale market applications, such as the cross-color problem of three-color light sources (the more partitions, the more obvious), the complexity of the design process caused by the increase in chip density (including driver IC and PCB design), the coordination problem of algorithms and hardware, and the rising costs caused by this series of difficulties.

Currently, many manufacturers in the LED industry chain are actively cooperating with customers in the development of RGB Mini LED backlight projects. From the first perspective of supply chain production and manufacturing, we can directly understand the mass production difficulties of this technology.

In terms of technology and process, on the packaging side, Nationstar Optoelectronics stated that RGB Mini LEDs still have the problem of light and color crosstalk, and the current cost of RGB Mini LEDs is much higher than that of ordinary Mini LEDs. Hongli Intelligence pointed out that the main technical difficulties of this technology lie in the attenuation problem of the upstream RGB chip, as well as the terminal system software control and algorithm. Ruifeng Optoelectronics also stated that the RGB three-color LED chip process is complex and needs to be equipped with a supporting light control chip to solve problems such as uniform luminous efficiency of the three-color light source and high-temperature color shift, which requires extremely high coordination between algorithms and hardware.

On the chip side, Zhaochi Semiconductor said that Mini LED chips have high density (tens of thousands of units per unit), and fluctuations in yield will directly drive up costs. In terms of cross-color, thousand-level partitioning still cannot completely suppress the edge flare problem in high-contrast scenes. Finer partitioning, more advanced optical design, and smarter algorithms are needed to improve it. At the same time, the heat flux density of ultra-dense LED modules exceeds 50W/cm2, and the traditional aluminum extruded heat sink is 3mm thicker, which brings heat dissipation and reliability challenges. If such high heat cannot be effectively exported, it will not only affect the light efficiency and life of the LED, but may also cause color shift and even damage the device. Therefore, the design of an efficient and thin heat dissipation solution is crucial.

It can be said that the "difficulty" of RGB Mini LED backlight technology is systemic, involving the entire industry chain from upstream chip materials, midstream packaging manufacturing, driver IC and other supporting equipment to downstream system integration and algorithm optimization. In view of this, there are voices in the market saying that RGB Mini LED backlight TV is just a gorgeous gimmick thrown by brand manufacturers in the high-end market game.

Is there any future for RGB Mini LED backlight?

Faced with the challenges mentioned above and the skepticism of some "marketing gimmicks" in the market, what is the future of RGB Mini LED backlight technology? Judging from the active layout and firm stance of the core manufacturers in the industry chain, the answer is yes - it is not only "playable", but may also be brewing a revolution in the high-end display market.

Zhaochi Semiconductor admitted frankly that at this stage, RGB Mini LED has indeed achieved a significant improvement in display parameters, but is limited by the maturity of the industry chain and cost performance, and is currently targeted at the high-end audio and video enthusiast market. Judging from the actual needs of end customers, high-end applications are expected to make further breakthroughs. Zhaochi Semiconductor believes that 2024 is a key node for RGB Mini LED backlight technology to move from concept verification to the early stage of large-scale mass production. The high-end TV market pattern is undergoing structural adjustments as a result, but it is expected that it will still take nearly three years for the benign resonance of the three elements of technology, supply chain, and price.

Zhaochi Semiconductor has made progress in the development of RGB Mini LED backlight chips. It uses original ultra-thin grinding technology, high-welding Bonding electrode development and other technologies to improve product quality stability and consistency; for red light chips, Zhaochi Semiconductor uses high-reflective Metal technology, high-flexibility endurance electrodes, ultra-low temperature bonding and other technologies to effectively improve chip reliability.

Nationstar Optoelectronics believes that RGB Mini LED backlight technology is a leapfrog upgrade in the evolution of Mini LED display technology, providing new ideas and growth points for the development of the industry. Therefore, it is not just a marketing gimmick, but is also expected to become an important opportunity for domestic TV brands to surpass Korean TV brand manufacturers in the high-end market. Looking to the future, with the continuous optimization of technology maturity and cost, after a short market cultivation period, it is expected that more RGB Mini LED backlight TV products of different sizes and price ranges will be introduced to the market to meet the needs of different consumers and achieve large-scale commercialization.

According to Nationstar Optoelectronics’ understanding and contacts, most manufacturers have a strong interest in RGB Mini LED, and it is expected that more brands will follow suit in the future. Nationstar Optoelectronics has already laid out the application of BG+KSF (blue chip + KSF phosphor solution), RGB and other technologies in the field of backlight, covering various backlight forms such as side-type, direct-type, Mini, etc. It is currently cooperating with major head brand manufacturers to develop RGB Mini LED models of multiple sizes and pass test verification. At the same time, Nationstar Optoelectronics has achieved significant results in cost optimization by developing RGB LED packaging structural solutions with large light emission angles and red light alternatives.

Hongli Zhihui is also optimistic about the prospects of RGB Mini LED backlight technology, believing that with its significant improvements in color, energy efficiency and image quality, it has become an important direction for display technology iteration, so it is not just a marketing gimmick. Hongli Zhihui said that the mass-produced products of Hisense and other brands have verified the technical advantages of RGB Mini LED backlight, and the strategic follow-up of international giants such as Samsung and Sony further demonstrates the industry's recognition of this technology.

However, Hongli Zhihui is also clearly aware that due to high costs and manufacturing complexity, RGB Mini LED backlight is only suitable for focusing on the high-end market in the short term. In the next 2-3 years, industry chain optimization (such as improving chip yield and reducing partition costs) will be needed to promote popularization. Hongli Intelligence predicts that 2025 will be the first year of Mini LED TVs, but RGB Mini LED backlight TVs still have some way to go. Regarding this technology, Hongli Zhihui relies on its packaging experience accumulated in the field of Mini LED backlight and direct display and bluntly stated: "There is no technical bottleneck in dealing with Mini LED RGB backlight packaging." The company has launched relevant cooperation projects with customers.

According to Ruifeng Optoelectronics, RGB Mini LED backlight is an important innovation in display technology. The company pointed out that the current difficulty with this technology lies in the mass production process of RGB Mini LED chips and RGB brightness and color control. Solving these problems requires self-research of chips, algorithm optimization, and industry chain integration. In this regard, Hisense and other terminal manufacturers have achieved breakthroughs through technologies such as "two-core synergy" and "Vientiane Partitioning". However, Ruifeng Optoelectronics also knows that to promote RGB Mini LED from concept to mass production, it still needs to further reduce costs to expand market penetration.

Ruifeng Optoelectronics has been developing Mini LED technology since 2016, taking the lead in achieving mass production in the field of Mini LED. Whether it is Mini LED backlight or RGB Mini LED backlight technology, it has invested many years of research and formed significant technology accumulation, and is currently actively cooperating with clients for customized development.

In summary, as the cost of mainstream Mini LED backlight technology continues to drop, and consumers endlessly pursue the ultimate picture quality, the emergence of RGB Mini LED backlight is inevitable for technological development and is also the call of market demand. The achievements of brand manufacturers and the efforts of the supply chain show that RGB Mini LED backlight technology has made a substantial breakthrough. Next, with the collaborative promotion of upstream and downstream manufacturers, the gradual improvement of industry chain supporting facilities, and the continuous optimization of software and algorithms, the problems of RGB Mini LED backlight technology are expected to be overcome one by one.

Written at the end

As a product of the evolution of the new display technology era, RGB Mini LED backlight TV is expected to become a new "weapon" for TV brand manufacturers to seek differentiation and new profit growth points in the fierce competition in the high-end market. This indicates that the competition in the high-end market has begun to escalate to a new dimension, and it also means that the pattern of display technology may be reshaped.

Nationstar Optoelectronics believes that if RGB Mini LED backlights can maintain their technical advantages and gradually approach or even surpass high-end LCD TVs in price, with the promotion of domestic brands, RGB Mini LED backlight TVs are expected to further seize the share of OLED TVs in the high-end market, reshape the high-end TV brand landscape, and form a new trend in the high-end TV market dominated by RGB Mini LED. In the short to medium term, RGB Mini LED will serve as a powerful supplement to the high-end market, forming differentiated competition with OLED and traditional Mini LED. In the long term, if the mass production process of Micro LED continues to be delayed, RGB Mini LED may even become a key transition solution in the field of large-size displays.

Ruifeng Optoelectronics stated that the outbreak of RGB Mini LED indeed marks the entry of display technology into a new cycle. The current high-end market presents a pattern of "OLED and Mini LED competing for supremacy". OLED has advantages in contrast and color accuracy due to its self-luminous characteristics, while Mini LED continues to penetrate through zoned light control and high brightness. RGB Mini LED backlight technology is breaking this average with its better color expression. However, a variety of technical routes will still coexist for a long time to come.

From the perspective of consumers, Hongli Zhihui said that if you pursue the ultimate picture quality and have sufficient budget, RGB Mini LED backlight is the more rational high-end choice at present; if you focus on cost performance, traditional Mini LED backlight is still the mainstream.

From the perspective of the overall concept of Mini LED, Zhaochi Semiconductor believes that OLED will still dominate the small-size application market such as high-end mobile phones and folding screens in the future, while Mini LED will form a tug-of-war with OLED in the medium and large-size application market (for example, in the field of high-end TVs, Mini LED wins with cost-effectiveness, while OLED attracts premium users with picture quality). In the future, Mini LED will replace part of OLED's share in the mid-to-high-end LCD market (especially large sizes) through a combination of "high performance + price-friendliness" and become a key technology to extend the life cycle of LCDs. As for Micro LED, it is difficult for it to threaten Mini LED and OLED in the short term. The three will coexist in different price ranges. In the long term, if Micro LED breaks through the cost bottleneck, it is expected to gradually erode the high-end market, but Mini LED can still maintain the mid-range price range with its cost-effectiveness.

In the foreseeable future, RGB Mini LED backlight technology is expected to coexist with LCD, OLED, Micro LED and other technologies for a long time to jointly build a diversified and high-quality display world. Looking further, AU Optronics' exploration of combining RGB Mini LED backlight with FSC field color sequence technology reveals the infinite possibilities for future technology integration and innovation. It is true that the whistle of the high-end display industry has been blown, and the arrival of new technologies such as RGB Mini LED backlight will be highly anticipated.
