KOPIN wins military contract for MicroLED full-color microdisplay

On April 24, US microdisplay manufacturer KOPIN announced that the company had received a new contract from the US Army, which involves a Soldier Display Trade Study project to study the application of Micro LED full-color microdisplays in military XR head-up displays (HUD).

This new contract will clarify the microdisplay standards required for the next generation of soldier vision systems, covering head-mounted see-through displays, handheld devices, platform-mounted systems, and advanced weapon targeting devices such as the Next Generation Squad Weapon Fire Control System (NGSW-FC).

The focus of this project is to study the application performance of ultra-high brightness Micro LED in see-through XR applications, giving priority to the development of displays that can be used in daytime environments, while taking into account higher energy efficiency and clear visibility under a variety of different lighting conditions. The study will culminate in a comprehensive Microdisplay Requirements and Performance Matrix report that will set standards for the next generation of soldier vision systems.

It is reported that Micro LED technology has significant advantages over traditional display solutions, including higher brightness, better energy efficiency, longer service life, and the elimination of common time artifacts based on laser scanning (LBS) technology. These features ensure daytime readability and system reliability of the XR heads-up display, while minimizing the nausea and discomfort common with early XR systems.

Worth noting Interestingly, as a micro-display company, KOPIN's technical products include: AMLCD, LCOS, Micro OLED, Micro LED microdisplays, as well as various optical devices and low-power ASIC products.

The defense and military fields are one of the main supply markets for KOPIN's microdisplays. In the past year, the defense field business contributed most of KOPIN's revenue. Thanks to the increase in product shipments for thermal imaging weapon sight applications, KOPIN will achieve total revenue of US$50.03 million in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 24.6%.

This year, KOPIN has also received multiple defense business contracts. In addition to this research project, in April, KOPIN also received a multi-year contract from a first-level contractor of the U.S. Department of Defense with a total amount of US$7.5 million (approximately RMB 54.71 million) to supply microdisplays for pilot helmet display AR systems.
