Philips to close Canadian lighting factory

Dutch lighting giant Philips plans to close Philips Canlyte, a lighting manufacturing plant located in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. The factory was put into production in 1987 and was originally affiliated with the Canlyte brand of Canadian lighting manufacturer Genlyte Group. In 2008, after Philips acquired the Genlyte Group, the factory was renamed Philips Canlyte.

The Philips Canlyte factory will be officially closed in March 2015. Prior to this, the factory will gradually stop producing incandescent lamps and transfer the production tasks of LED lamps to other factories in North America.
It is expected that 190 employees will be affected by the closure of the factory. Philips spokesperson Santina Giuliano said the company is currently notifying employees of relevant compensation agreements.
Philips stated that as more and more companies and industries get involved in the production of LED lamps, changes in market demand are the reasons for the withdrawal of the factory.
