Investing 2.433 billion yuan to build India's first MicroLED mass production line

Recently, the Indian government issued an announcement approving Crystal Matrix, a new Indian semiconductor company, to establish a comprehensive production base in Dholera, Gujarat, focusing on the research and development and large-scale mass production of next-generation display technology Micro LED. The total investment in the project is expected to reach US$336 million (equivalent to approximately RMB 2.433 billion). The Indian government stated that this project is India’s first Micro LED mass production line.

Crystal Matrix’s new factory will cover the entire industry chain of compound semiconductor manufacturing and assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP). According to the plan, after the facility is put into operation, it will produce 72,000 square meters of display panels per year, and 24,000 sets of 6-inch gallium nitride and aluminum gallium indium phosphorus epitaxial wafers per year, covering red, green and blue products. The technical application range covers large-size display screens, IT equipment, smartphone displays, and micro-displays. Crystal Matrix has reached in-depth cooperation with Korean LED manufacturer Lumens and epitaxy company Soft-Epi to introduce advanced production processes.

While the Crystal Matrix project is advancing, the Indian government has also approved another semiconductor project. Suchi Semicon, a new Indian semiconductor company, plans to establish a semiconductor packaging and testing services (OSAT) factory in Surat, Gujarat, specializing in the production of discrete semiconductor devices. The annual production capacity is expected to exceed 1 billion chips.

The cumulative investment in the above two projects exceeds US$400 million (equivalent to approximately RMB 2.897 billion) and is expected to create 2,230 local jobs for high-quality professional talents, further consolidating Gujarat's status as India's "semiconductor hub".

It is worth noting that India has been promoting the development of the local semiconductor and LED industries in recent years to reduce import dependence and strengthen the Indian semiconductor supply chain. Under the framework of the "India Semiconductor Mission" (ISM), the Indian government is committed to establishing a complete local supply chain through policy support and financial subsidies.

The Indian government stated that this LED project is a compound semiconductor manufacturing integration facility, targeting the production of Mini/Micro LED display modules; the Suchi Semicon company project will serve the automotive, industrial and electronic fields.

It is reported that the Indian government aims to increase the size of the domestic semiconductor market to US$100 billion to US$110 billion by 2030.
