BMW launches world's first mass-produced e-paper model

The BMW iX3 Flow Edition concept car equipped with E Ink Prism technology was officially unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, becoming the world's first car to introduce E Ink Prism and move towards mass production.

The BMW iX3 Flow Edition introduces E Ink Prism electronic paper into the car's exterior. It has passed BMW's strict quality testing and meets the needs of automotive engineering and daily use. Its design includes 8 animation effects, allowing drivers to customize the appearance of the vehicle according to their personal style, mood expression or driving situation.

Electrophoretic e-paper technology is widely used in e-book readers and other products. The principle is to change the arrangement of millions of microcapsules containing charged particles driven by an electric field, so that the surface presents different visual effects. When applied to the surface of a car, the appearance of the car body can be dynamically changed with extremely low energy consumption, because power is only consumed when switching screens, demonstrating the uniqueness of e-paper technology in terms of energy saving and design.

Looking back on the cooperation between the two parties, from the BMW iX Flow at CES 2022, to the full-color color-changing capabilities demonstrated by BMW i Vision Dee in 2023, to the artistic design presented by BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, both parties continue to break through the boundaries of imagination in car personalization, digitalization and design innovation.

With the debut of the BMW iX3 Flow Edition, it demonstrates the technological progress of E Ink electronic paper applied to the car body surface, reaching an important milestone from customized vehicle prototypes to future large-scale introduction into car models.
