Recently, the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems in Germany announced that it has successfully developed a new red Micro OLED microdisplay with both ultra-high brightness and high efficiency. It is reported that the first batch of innovative results of this technology will be officially unveiled at the SID European Mid-term Conference in Lisbon, Portugal.
In the current field of wearable technology, Micro OLED microdisplays are very popular due to their compact design, high-definition picture quality and low energy consumption. The latest achievements of Fraunhofer IPMS push the brightness performance of this system to a new level. The microdisplay can not only present dynamic, fully graphical symbols, but also significantly improve the accuracy of precision alignment and greatly simplify the optical assembly process.
In terms of technical architecture, this new display continues the institute's consistent advantages. It is manufactured based on standard CMOS semiconductor processes and uses a silicon-based backplane as the core support of OLED technology.
According to Uwe Vogel, director of the Microdisplay and Sensor Department, this red Micro OLED microdisplay achieves a brightness of up to 35,000 cd/m² while maintaining extremely low power consumption. It is reported that the display mainly uses ultra-low power consumption technology. When the display system updates the image, it only adjusts the changed pixels instead of refreshing the entire screen, thus fundamentally saving a lot of energy.
For a long time, red Micro OLED has been facing challenges in high brightness performance. This time, the R&D team successfully overcome this technical bottleneck by developing a new OLED stack structure containing high-efficiency materials, allowing micro-display devices to still display data clearly in strong sunlight environments.
In addition, this new Micro OLED stack structure has excellent compatibility and can be flexibly transferred to backplanes of various specifications. Scientists at Fraunhofer IPMS said that in the future, they will carry out customized product development related to high-brightness Micro OLED micro-display products for specific customers and application scenarios.
