Over 100 million, new strategic investment in MicroLED optical interconnection field

According to reports, Mojo Vision, a developer of Micro LED microdisplay and optical I/O technology, recently announced that it has received a strategic investment of US$17.5 million (approximately RMB 121 million) from Future Ventures. This round of investment will further promote the research, development and commercialization of its Micro LED-based optical communication platform, focusing on next-generation AI infrastructure applications.

Join hands with Marvell to enter the AI data center optical interconnection track

As the potential of Micro LED in the field of optical communication gradually explodes, Mojo Vision is actively extending from micro-display to the field of optical communication. Recently, it has reached a long-term strategic cooperation agreement with Marvell Technology, a US data infrastructure semiconductor manufacturer. The two parties will jointly develop a new generation of optical interconnect solutions based on Micro LED.

It is reported that the cooperation covers multiple generations of product lines, and the two parties have actually been promoting research and development in a low-key manner for more than a year. This external disclosure marks that the project has entered a clearer industrialization stage. In this cooperation, Marvell will contribute its technology accumulation in the field of high-speed connection and data infrastructure chips and form synergy with Mojo Vision's Micro LED platform.

It is worth noting that in September 2025, Mojo Vision completed US$75 million (approximately RMB 520 million) in financing, and Marvell was one of the leading investors. In this strategic cooperation, both parties are targeting the hyperscale and cloud data center markets, and are committed to responding to the urgent need for high-bandwidth, low-power interconnection architecture in the context of the explosion of AI computing power.

Micro LED optical I/O: Reimagining the data center interconnect paradigm

At the technical level, Mojo Vision proposes an optical I/O architecture based on Micro LED to achieve a performance jump through large-scale parallel optical communication. Its solution can integrate thousands of optical channels on a chip "the size of a grain of sand", significantly increasing bandwidth density and reducing energy consumption per unit bit.

According to Mojo Vision, its Micro LED optical interconnect technology has key features such as energy consumption less than Sub-1 pJ/bit and bandwidth density exceeding 100 Tbps/mm2. At the same time, through software-defined architecture, dynamic mapping of Micro LED emitters can be realized, and a pixel-level redundancy mechanism can be introduced, thereby significantly improving system reliability and fault tolerance, and adapting to the requirements of AI data center systems for low energy consumption, high speed, and highly integrated interconnection technology.

Marvell also pointed out that Micro LED is becoming one of the important technical paths to achieve high-performance data center connections. Especially in the context of AI servers’ increasing requirements for high throughput and energy efficiency ratio, its potential has become increasingly prominent.

Strategic transformation from smart contact lenses to data infrastructure

It is worth noting that Mojo Vision was originally known to the industry for developing Micro LED smart contact lenses and has accumulated more than US$200 million in financing. However, in 2023, the company will carry out strategic contraction and direction adjustment, significantly reduce related businesses, and shift its focus to the field of Micro LED micro-display technology.

After the transformation, Mojo Vision has raised more than US$100 million in total and continues to promote technology implementation: such as achieving ultra-high pixel density Micro LED displays of up to 28,000 PPI, launching full-color Micro LED micro-display prototypes, and cooperating with automotive technology company CY Vision to develop next-generation HUD systems based on Micro LED...

Currently, Mojo Vision has built a complete Micro LED technology platform covering display and optical interconnection, including monolithic RGB Micro LED microdisplays and optical I/O solutions form differentiated competitive advantages.

Conclusion

Overall, Mojo Vision’s financing and its cooperation with Marvell are another important example of Micro LED extending from the display field to non-display fields such as data communications and computing infrastructure. As AI data centers continue to increase their bandwidth density and energy efficiency requirements, optical interconnect technology is becoming one of the key bottlenecks.

Against this background, Micro LED has been regarded as one of the important technology paths for the next generation of optical interconnection due to its high modulation speed, low power consumption and high integration characteristics. A deeper look shows that the LED industry chain is accelerating its integration with the semiconductor industry, which is expected to help Micro LED open up a broader development space.
