Sphere Entertainment is actively preparing a scaled-down version of its iconic Las Vegas sphere to bring this unique experience to more cities in a more affordable way. The company's executive chairman and CEO James Dolan recently revealed on an investor call that it is developing a "mini-sphere" that can accommodate about 5,000 people, a significant reduction from the original Las Vegas sphere, which can accommodate up to 20,000 people.
The Las Vegas Sphere, whose construction costs climbed to $2.3 billion from an initial estimate of $1.2 billion, features the world's highest-resolution 160,000-square-foot LED surround screen. However, this scale also brings huge challenges to the performers, because customized visual content requires huge investment. Currently, only top artists such as U2 and the Eagles can afford such a budget. U2 even specially invited Light and Shadow Magic Industries to assist in the production of visual effects.
The mini-sphere will retain the original signature technology but occupy a smaller footprint, which will not only reduce construction and operating costs, but also attract more artists with limited budgets. At the same time, these small venues can also screen immersive concert films, such as "V U2 Las Vegas Sphere Immersive Concert Film" and "Postcards from the Earth" directed by Darren Aronofsky, which has been screened at the Las Vegas Sphere for more than 1,000 times. Such productions cost far less than traditional live performances and provide audiences with an immersive experience without the need for the artist to be physically present.
The mini-sphere plan was announced after Sphere Entertainment announced the construction of a second full-size sphere in the UAE in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Dolan said: "We are on the road to realizing the vision of a new generation of media and creating long-term value for shareholders." The specific construction time and location of the mini-sphere has not been announced, but this strategy shows that the company is fully committed to promoting the global expansion of its unique immersive entertainment model.
