February 4, 2022, the beginning of spring. After 14 years, the Olympic flame was lit again at the Bird's Nest in Beijing. Through large LED screens, Chinese culture once again amazed the world with its romantic feelings.
From the "Horizontal Scroll" of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to the "Twenty-Four Solar Terms Countdown" of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, "The Water of the Yellow River Comes from the Sky" and "The Five Olympic Rings Break Through the Ice", behind the stunning effects of the program are the perfect "answer sheets" submitted by domestic innovative display companies to global audiences.
"If the 2008 Olympic Games was the starting point for promoting the development of the domestic LED industry, then the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will be the prelude to the LED industry taking off again." Recently, Li Jun, chairman and general manager of Leyard Group, said this when he was a guest on the "Dialogue with Entrepreneurs" column of the People's Daily Online.
Recalling the unparalleled opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, Li Jun could not hide his pride. This embodies the wisdom and hard work of domestic display companies including Leyard.
In 2022, a total of about 11,000 square meters of ground display screens, 1,200 square meters of ice waterfall screens, 600 square meters of ice cube screens, and 1,000 square meters of grandstand screens will be used at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, forming the world's "largest" LED display system. Leyard is responsible for more than 70% of the screen construction, as well as the design, operation and maintenance of the overall display system.
Li Jun said that compared to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Leyard was more confident and calm this time. "The success in 2008 was partly due to luck. It would have been more troublesome if it rained heavily. But this time there is a foolproof technical guarantee, which makes people more at ease overall."
Li Jun's confidence and steadiness stem from the "heavy" technology accumulation and rich "family wealth" of domestic enterprises. In the past 14 years, my country's display industry has achieved rapid growth and embarked on a development curve from catching up and breakthrough to innovation and leadership.
"China's LED industry has accounted for more than 80% of the world's total output. In this industry, there are no technical blockades or 'stuck neck' problems. Chinese companies have opened up the entire industrial chain and ecological chain." Li Jun is confident.
The market share has grown from small to large, and the technical capabilities have grown from weak to strong. What kind of "unique skills" does the development of China's display industry have?
As an important leader in the industry, Li Jun believes that innovation-driven is the eternal logic to promote the sustainable development of the industry. "China's display industry has achieved such achievements today and has such a high market share. Its driving force must be technological leadership and innovation-driven."
Take Leyard as an example. In the past 20 years of deep involvement in the LED display industry, the company has repeatedly promoted the LED industry to complete technological changes and product development. Innovation: In 1998, it successfully developed the first full-color LED display in China; in 2010, it developed the world's first 2.5mm small-pitch high-definition LED TV, setting off a technological revolution in which LED small-pitch replaced DLP/LCD large-screen wall-mounting; in 2020, it took the lead in promoting Micro LED technology and product innovation, and actively promote the industrial development of Micro LED display.
After repeated trials and errors and updates, Leyard has continued to expand its share of the small-pitch LED market, and its production and application costs have shown an exponential downward trend. "In 2019 alone, our small-pitch products sold more than 4 billion yuan, and I am really proud of it."
Fish live in water and birds fly in the wind. Nearly 28 years of entrepreneurial experience have not only allowed Li Jun to witness breakthroughs in my country's display industry again and again, but also made him deeply aware of the continuous improvement of the business environment.
"Our generation of entrepreneurs is really a product of the times. It just caught up with the reform and opening up and the market economy, which provided a good macro external environment and policy environment for our innovation and entrepreneurship."
Talk about the current situation, Li Jun saw that the whole society is still further optimizing the development environment of the private economy and boosting the confidence of enterprise development. Relevant policies have given key support to high-tech industries in terms of tax exemptions, talent introduction, and industrial financing, providing important guarantees for enterprises to increase capital and expand production.
"Further promoting the development of the private economy is an important starting point for China to promote employment and ensure economic growth, and will ultimately push our country's economy to a broader stage." He suggested that we continue to increase support for enterprises, encourage private enterprises to play more leading roles, and stimulate the enthusiasm and innovation momentum of the private economy with more stable and sustainable support policies.
Looking to the future, a more splendid picture is slowly unfolding. Facing the ever-changing new situations and new methods of playing in the future, how can Chinese display companies respond to the ever-changing changes and move from success to success?
Li Jun believes that people’s pursuit of a better life will not stop. Innovative applications of cutting-edge technologies such as digitalization, artificial intelligence, and the metaverse are constantly subverting people’s imagination of future display technology. Chinese companies have a lot to do.
As an industry leader, the strategic direction he gave was fierce and direct: "To run a business, you must have the courage to 'renovate your own life'!"
"There is no chance of following what others say." Li Jun pointed out that no matter how the situation changes, entrepreneurs need to have the concentration, judgment and innovation to focus on the main business. Only in this way can we seize market opportunities amidst risks and challenges and continue to play the "first move" in industry competition.
