Innolux establishes a new company to focus on the research, development and application of MicroLED technology

According to media reports, Innolux established a new company, Qunchao Display Technology Co., Ltd. in February this year. The new company focuses on the research and development and manufacturing of MicroLED technology and is led by Wang Zhichao, former chairman of Innolux.

It is reported that Qunchao Display Technology Co., Ltd. has a registered capital of NT$150 million and is located at Innolux’s T3 factory in Zhunan, which was the previous LTPS panel factory of Tongbao. Currently, the T3 factory is Innolux’s main research and development base for MicroLED.

In recent years, Innolux has continued to deploy Micro LED technology. In addition to Hon Hai Group's LED factories Rongchuang and Guanghuang, in 2017, Innolux, Sharp and Rongchuang jointly acquired eLux, a new American company, which plays an important role in the development of MicroLED technology within the group.

In terms of Micro LED technology, in order to overcome the problem of high mass transfer and maintenance costs of RGB, Innolux teamed up with eLux to find a new approach, using color conversion technology to simplify the mass transfer and maintenance process and improve display uniformity. This strategy helps reduce production costs and improve product yields.

Innolux pointed out in its previous press conference that the company's Micro LED technology has been implemented in car companies and large-size TVs, and it is also discussing mass production plans with customers. The color conversion technology is planned to be used in large-size display panels and automotive panels. The color conversion MicroLED technology is expected to be shipped within 1 to 2 years; the development time for automotive displays is longer, and it may take another 2 to 3 years. The company's Micro LED products are planned to be manufactured in the 3.5-generation low-temperature polysilicon production line first and then in the 6-generation line in the future.

Qiu Yubin, senior vice president of research at TrendForce, said that currently it will take some time for various panel manufacturers to promote MicroLED mass production, but eLux currently has some results in a new mass transfer technology solution such as FSA fluid self-assembly. In the future, in addition to serving the group, after the establishment of a new company, the technology can also be marketed externally, becoming a vital part of the group's MicroLED strategic layout.
