On February 25, Bloomberg reported that the rumored MacBook Pro equipped with an OLED touch screen that Apple is developing will use the iPhone’s smart island design and hole-punch camera.
Smart islands will replace notches, leaving more screen space available for content. Similar to Smart Island on the iPhone, the Mac version of Smart Island also supports interaction and will be contextually expanded based on the app or system function being used.
Apple is optimizing macOS to make it more suitable for touch operations. Users can click or tap elements on the screen, and the interface controls will automatically change based on the input method. For example, when a user taps a menu bar item, a larger set of controls optimized for touch appears. Touch-related options will be fully integrated into macOS, and the system will also support gesture functions on the iPad, such as pinch-to-zoom and fast scrolling.
This new MacBook Pro will be the first Mac to support touch gestures on the screen, although Apple has insisted for years that it will not introduce touch technology to Macs. Apple had previously tried an OLED Touch Bar on older MacBook Pros, but it was ultimately canceled due to unpopularity with users. Obviously, Apple will not promote this MacBook Pro as "touch first" like the iPad, but will allow users to alternately use touch and mouse gestures in all functions.
In addition to the touch screen and OLED display technology, the new MacBook Pro may adopt a slimmer body design, but the overall appearance is similar to the current MacBook Pro. Apple won't get rid of the keyboard or trackpad, and the screen size isn't expected to change. Apple plans to launch OLED versions of both 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.
Apple plans to upgrade the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips for MacBook Pro this spring, and the OLED version of MacBook Pro will be equipped with M6 Pro and M6 Max chips using the new 2nm process. The OLED version of MacBook Pro is expected to be released at the end of 2026, which means Apple plans to update the MacBook Pro twice in 2026.
