Our lives are inseparable from display devices, but do you know? In imaging technology, as a little-known backlight system, it has been updated several times in recent years. Its purpose is to make our experience more comfortable and healthier due to the increase in the frequency of use of display devices. In 2014, imaging technology is quietly undergoing a revolution in lighting systems - the so-called second-generation LED backlight technology "clean blue screen" is about to come to us. Today, we will take a retrospective look at the backlight system that we have not paid much attention to in recent years, and see what revolutionary changes the second-generation LED backlight technology has made.
Since LCD monitors replaced CRT monitors, they have faced a technical problem - light emission. Because the LCD monitor relies on driving liquid crystal molecules for imaging, which is different from the active light-emitting characteristics of the CRT electron gun, it requires the LCD monitor to be equipped with a backlight module to achieve lighting, so that our naked eyes can see images with brightness changes instead of pitch-black images. The backlight used in traditional LCD monitors is CCFL lamps, which are the most common lighting equipment in our lives, but they are reduced in size and can be placed in the monitor. However, because traditional CCFL backlights are large in size, consume high power, generate a lot of heat, and contain toxic mercury, after the emergence of LED backlights, LCD displays using CCFL backlights are rarely seen in the market.
When the first generation of LED backlight technology appeared, it was crowned with countless auras, including green environmental protection, ultra-low energy consumption, and compact size... Whether it is desktop display devices such as TVs and monitors, or mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets, LED backlight has become a standard equipment for various types of LCD screens overnight due to its mercury-free material, higher luminous efficiency, and assembly methods that can make electronic products thinner and lighter. Just when the first generation of LEDs was gaining traction, medical experts discovered the biggest problem with LED backlights, which was that it caused pathogenic damage to human eye health. LED backlight uses blue light plus warm-color phosphor to achieve illumination. A large part of the blue light generated is short-wave blue light of 410-450nm. Short-wave blue light irradiates the eyes for a long time, which will produce a photoreactive substance in the eye - free radicals, which will cause the death of retinal pigment epithelial cells and eventually cause macular degeneration.
Revolutionary second generation LED backlight
In 2014, the revolutionary second-generation LED backlight finally appeared. The second-generation LED backlight successfully changed the peak spectral distribution of blue light intensity by changing the phosphor powder, the luminescent raw material of the LED, thus removing more than 90% of the short-wave blue light that damages the eyes, significantly improving the root cause of the problem.
Compared with the first generation LED backlight technology, the second generation LED backlight technology used for display device lighting can not only effectively remove blue light, but also close to zero loss in brightness and color. According to tests by authoritative organizations, when the net blue light execution efficiency is as high as 90%, the picture brightness loss is only 2%. Compared with the significant color temperature change and brightness loss of blue filter technology, the effect comparison is clear at a glance. Therefore, from the perspective of implementation cost and actual effect, the second generation LED backlight technology will be used in more LCD screens such as our mobile phones, tablets, monitors, and TVs in the future. By then, we no longer need to be afraid of the dangers of blue light.
If the first-generation LED backlight replaced CCFL through the environmental protection concept of mercury-free and low energy consumption, then the second-generation LED backlight’s net blue light technology, launched with AOC as the first, focuses on blue light, a pathogenic hazard, and achieves a revolutionary health experience upgrade. In the future, we believe that more and more LCD screens will adopt this technology to achieve the full popularization of net blue light technology.
